I did this hike in August 2005 and loved it. Avalanche Lake is a beautiful destination and a great photo op. I continued around to the far side of the lake, rock-hopped across the stream that feeds into the lake, and continued all the way around.
One suggestion: If you decide to go to the far side of the lake, make sure to return by the same route. I made a complete circle around the lake and had to wade through the lake's outlet stream, then cross a log jam to get back to the trail. The outlet had a mucky, slippery bottom that was difficult to negotiate. I managed to keep my backpack and cameras dry, but it was not fun hiking back to my car with lake-water-soaked shorts.
